a love letter for you

after the muddled feelings of my last post, i thought i would very decidedly change the tone with images of these incredible & inspiring murals by artist steve powers that happen to be right here in philly.

though i may not feel any more clarity than i did last week in terms of my life's work, i am lucky to have the most amazing partner in my husband, who is with me every step of the way, through the good and the bad. these murals are another reminder to me that i already have what i value most... him. where we live, where we work -- it's all secondary & it will fall into place, though maybe not exactly at the instant that i want it to. wherever we are, we'll be together. and that's enough.

i also want to thank you all for your encouraging comments on my last post... it means so much & has helped me along my way this past week, tremendously so. i promise not to abandon my etsy shops... i've just got to find the right balance in my life & i'm examining it all from every angle to find that balance. i'm planning on a lot more outdoor adventures, time with friends, & exploring new opportunities to help shed a little light on what i'm meant to do. and i suppose, even if i don't find it, i'll have fun in the process!

the absentee

i'd like to think that i am a focused, dauntless, & resilient person. that i'm capable of anything that i put my mind to.

i'd like to think that my work & personal life are in harmony.

i'd like to think that my current career path is well-suited for me. that it makes sense. that it helps me achieve this harmonious balance in life.

but what i've realized is this: sometimes, even the most fervent beliefs aren't enough. i can't will something to be true that simply isn't. and though certainly i can continue to work towards a goal that has proven elusive... maybe what i want isn't what i thought i wanted. maybe i don't know what i want.

and that's okay.

(i'm still working on accepting that last bit of wisdom as my personal mantra, but goodness knows: accept it is exactly what i must do.)

a bit about how i arrived at this crossroads:

i always knew what i wanted to do. so i did it. i went to college. i studied fashion. i became a designer at a company that i wanted to design for. i worked there for four years. i slowly became someone that i didn't recognize. i caught the ubiquitous disease-of-more. i had an abundance but felt that it wasn't enough. i left this company. i decided to strike it out on my own. make etsy a living. i set a weekly goal for myself that i considered to be modest. i never stopped working. or worrying. or anxiously awaiting my next sale. some weeks i exceeded my self-prescribed modest goal, but clearly, these were not the weeks that inspired the creeping self-doubt. they were the weeks that i came up short. proper coping mechanisms were not in place. self-loathing ensued. anxiety levels sky-rocketed. (perhaps the past tense is not the most accurate one to be used here, but i'm working on that.)

again, i find that i don't quite recognize myself... and this time for different reasons, but really, the end result is the same: now what? what on earth am i meant to do?

and this is exactly why i have been so very absent here. in a world that hosts every imaginable variety of social marketing & self-promotion (some that i haven't even attempted to understand... chictopia? weardrobe? oh dear), i am overwhelmed. and confused. and not without lingering self-doubt.

now, *ahem* i don't fool myself into thinking that this is something that has been weighing on your minds, however, i do believe that honesty is the best policy. you all have been kind enough to stop by my little blog & i appreciate that far more than you probably could ever know, so i thought it only fair to share a bit of the seedy underbelly of my mind.

so, as i re-evaluate, i seem to have made some small revelations:

what i definitely know: that i will continue both of my etsy shops (capacity undetermined). that i need to get out of the house more. and converse with real-live people. and that i need to do this on a regular basis.

what i think i know: that the above means that i need to get a job outside of the house.

what i don't know: how exactly this job will manifest. will i work part time at a boutique? maybe look into fashion freelance? possibly get another full time design job & make etsy a hobby again?

it's hazy. i suppose i'm still a work in progress... but then, aren't we all?

in my dreams: sister visit

i've made some plans to go to nyc for some sister-time next weekend & i couldn't be more excited. my excitement is due to several factors:

my sister is my best friend. i love her at least one million tons.
we will undoubtedly eat lots of delicious food.
i get to meet my cousin & his wife's brand-new baby boy. i suppose the baby is technically considered my second cousin, but that just sounds crazy to me... after all, he is not even a month old & i have 28 years under my belt. i think that a new term is in order.
we will perhaps... go shopping. (my sister & i, not the baby & i. c'mon guys, try to keep up.)

the prospect of these activities got me thinking: if i'm going to be traipsing around all day in steamy manhattan & brooklyn, i want some serious comfort. but i would also, ideally, look really great while enjoying said comfort. hence: my outfit wish-list.

although i cannot read a word of this swedish website, i will surmise from the looks of this lovely dress that it is silk. and that is precisely what i want to be wearing in 100 degree heat.

this delightful bag from hickoree's hard goods would come in handy for toting around some serious H2O reserves.

and finally, what has been the object of my affection for some time: these beautiful & wacky oxfords from osborn shoes.

now, as i mentioned, i recently indulged in a few wonderful things irl, so all three of the above beauties will have to remain right where they are: in my dreams. but two of my indulgences arrived in the mail today, so i will instead excitedly wear them. hooray!

ever since leaving anthro & striking it out on my own, i have become exceedingly pennywise. no more are the days of $300 skirts from cute little boutiques. nor are these the days of chie mihara anymore (though perhaps someday...). instead, these are the days of incessant thrifting, which, i must admit, have done my closet much more good than the spendy boutique visits. but, as it happens, i am not entirely reformed... there have been a few indiscretions this week (though all vintage & all from beloved etsy).

perfect, oh-so-perfect, dress that i scooped up from dear golden vintage this afternoon. i will be wearing this little piece of heaven to a wedding up in the adirondacks later this month. obviously, i will now be excitedly counting down the days to this event.

prim & adorable little blouse that i simply could not resist from vint condition. what pushed me over the edge is the fact that it was made in bucks county, just outside of philly. shop local, right? ha!

and then there are the perfect neutral everyday sandals (for which i've been in the market for some time now) from vim vigor vintage.

now that i have indulged & showered myself with (mostly undeserved) presents, i will now reel it in & go back to spending money almost exclusively on food, alcohol, & lace. it's a good thing i like those three things so much.

ahem. well. it seems that i fell off of the blog bandwagon for a good long while there, but i'm back. and with good reason. (oh, and i pinky swear that i won't let weeks pass without showing this blog some love again. really.)

i was browsing my tree & kimball google analytics (incidentally, best invention/ most fascinating tool ever) a week or two ago, when i stumbled upon... world's cutest girl. it's fair to say that i squealed with delight when i saw that she was wearing one of my necklaces. because, you guys, wait until you see her...

i know. i know. like i said: world's cutest girl.

old bits of paper with faded text peppered with vibrant cut out dots and linear ink drawings juxtaposed with old sepia photos?! be still my heart. and her color palette? don't even get me started.

you can grab (extremely affordable) prints of these beauties from her etsy shop. i'm still waiting to find out how i can get my hands on this one or this one (but sadly i think i'm out of luck). and i'd gladly take each & every single one of these too, thanks (of course her flickr is filled with so much eye candy that i can hardly stand it).

how to pick one?? decisions, decisions, as my mom would say. but i need at least one piece of her work, i know that much for sure.

bachelorette: stolen innocence

i've said it before, and i'll say it again -- i love my friends (and my little sis!). and here's why: for my bachelorette party, i was treated to a full day of fun.

we started our day at parc & had delicious brunch, complete with fancy cocktails.

and this really stole the show for me. {oh hai} a cheese plate with fresh honeycomb, blueberry compote, & three ridiculously good varieties of cheese. YUM.

did i mention that my little sis rented a red mini cooper convertible named mackenzie (zip car named it that, not us... i swear) for the day?! that's my friend nicole cruising in the back seat. awesome.

after brunch, nicole, my sis, & i went to get totally amazing massages & eye/ neck treatments. generally speaking, i'm not the most relaxed person {understatement of the year}, so this little treat made me feel like a million bucks.

later in the day, we met up with the rest of the ladies for dinner at rangoon. i  stuffed myself full of thousand layer bread, tea leaf salad, &  monsoon vegetable. yum again.

next up was karaoke at yakitori boy in chinatown. this was my first karaoke experience & i was not disappointed. let's take a look at the ladies in action, shall we?

oh, well, first let's figure out this dang karaoke machine. it's complicated. and nevermind the nasty lyrics on the screen -- we didn't pick those. we (i) wanted to listen/ sing to heart, not japanese rap, for goodness sakes.

okay, figured out by this point. not sure what we're singing to, but it must have been good.

this is fiona. she rules. she was the sultry voiced karaoke star of the evening.

okay, this was the part of the night that suddenly turned NSFB (not safe for blogging). we had a surprise (to me) ahem... gentleman caller? i've cropped out everything but his biker-themed arm, but you can clearly see the distress that his arrival brought me. good thing my sis isn't married yet... i'm TOTALLY getting her back for this one.

lots of shrieks, piles of whipped cream, & gratuitous nudity later, we moved on to my friends brian & nicole's house, where we met up with the boys. *phew*

surprise cheesecake! we all dug in (and did some very thorough work on it), while hanging on the stoop out front. yum yet again.

here's the boy & his best friend, ryan (but not in that order). no longer sober {other understatement of the year}.

after a brief stop at the world's sketchiest bar called the republican club (no idea why it is called that?), where we saw some incredibly skilled pole dancers, we made our way home, at long last. on our way back, ryan bought me some flowers at the gas station, as well as some tastycakes for travis (aw, how sweet).

so, to sum it up, it was an unbelievably fun day. it was filled with waaaay more nudity than this prude was prepared for, but boy was it worth it.

it's no secret that i love the whole white/ cream color family & my closet certainly shows the depths of my devotion to these soft neutrals. this summer, i foresee myself being faithful as ever to the mixture of denim & antique white.

grill 'em all

the mister & i took a trip up to new york on saturday, and for a very good reason: his best friend (& best man in our upcoming wedding) was competing on a food network show called food truck wars!! his truck, grill 'em all, is a super totally amazing heavy metal themed burger truck & he made the cut down to the final two trucks in the competition... it was face-off time! naturally, we had to be there to eat 54,643 burgers in his honor. here's a peek at how the day played out:

that's me, waiting for my veggie burger. oh, and did i mention that there were  television crews everywhere?! it was funny. that nice camera man kept me company while i waited for my cheese covered treat.

the mister caught me making a funny face as i was about to lay into burger #1. boy was it goooooood.

there he is, the man of the hour! that guy in the blue made my burger possible, bless his soul.

SPOILER ALERT! okay, so here's how the show works: grill 'em all is competing against only one other food truck at this point (a vietnamese banh mi truck) -- all the others have been eliminated. the final challenge was this: each truck had to go to each borough of new york, starting in queens, and make $500 at each stop -- and whoever did that & made it back to the flatiron building in manhattan first won!!

so, in the action shot above, they were packing up the truck in queens & heading for the next stop... brooklyn!

the brooklyn stop turned out to be awesome! loads of people were waiting at the brooklyn brewery in williamsburg for the truck to arrive & once it got there, there was a maaaad rush for a burger. there were some fat & happy people once grill 'em all was through with brooklyn. next was staten island!!

by the time we made our way to staten island, the mister & i were both ready for burger #2. since i am a creature of habit, i got the same thing -- the witte burger. cream cheese, sauteed peppers & onions, sriracha.... yummmm. oh, and since not a whole heck of a lot of people go for the veggie burger, they don't actually serve them. instead, they mash up french fries with loads of cheese & put it on a bun. and let me tell you: that is a-okay with me. also, i stuffed myself full of truffle french fries. because obviously you can never have too many french fries. duh.

the boy however opted for THE BEHEMOTH. what's that, you ask? for starters, the buns are grilled cheese sandwiches. oh YES. then, it's the delicious french-fry-gooey-cheese concoction, with beer soaked onions & smoked cheddar cheese. and if you're not a veg, then you get apple wood smoked bacon too. whoa!

after staten island, the truck ventured on to manhattan for the last leg of the competition, but for these two tired (and stuffed) folks, it was back to philly!

i'm pretty sure i'm totally not allowed to tell you who won, since the show hasn't even aired yet, buuuuut let's just say i am pleased as punch.

well, folks, it's happened... i'm another year older & i couldn't be happier about it. i rang in 28 with some seriously awesome friends, that boy that i like so much, & four reeeeeeally cute pups. i ate loads of delicious food cooked by said boy, received unexpected & beautifully thoughtful gifts from said group of friends, and the kicker? the LOST finale was on my birthday. i know. I KNOW. too good. another day that i count my lucky stars.

let's talk about her, shall we? this is maimer. she belongs to my friend mike. she is a smooshface. pretty uncoordinated, real wrinkly, and man, are those little teeth sharp. puppy breath too. i really love this nerd.

gorgeous flowers from my friends brian & nicole. these pretty ladies have been keeping me company in my studio, brightening my day & making me want to inhale a little deeper with each breath.

totally amazing hammered cuff with itsy bitsy imprinted arrows from la & karen. can you see the arrows? i love that they are a little secret until you look real real close. it's the little things. love love.

CHEESE. i love cheese. probably too much. my really killer friend lia got me 3(!) kinds of cheese for my b-day. we're going to eat these & drink beers in my backyard. i'm excited.*

*i accidentally cheated and already tried the dill havarti. don't tell lia. it was sooo good.

oh, only the most intricately beaded & completely stunning bag ever made. nbd. yet another humblingly incredible gift from my friend nicole. i'll be using this divine little number on my wedding day in (gasp!) a few weeks.

see that perfect little mustard flower pot with the pretty butter yellow petunias, purple bluebird, and dusty miller on the left there? my friend fiona potted those & gave them to me as a b-day gift. i needed one more flowerpot to make my little backyard the perfect little slice of heaven for me and she knew. i didn't tell her. she just knew. why am i so lucky? i dunno. but i am.

also, please note the small pup on the chaise. he is mine. i love him. please also note the hairbrush on the ground next to him. that's his favorite toy. he stole it from me one day as i was brushing my hair & it's been his ever since. it works out well anyway, i think -- he loves it much more than i ever did.

so, basically, to sum up the whole day: best ever. he's not pictured, but you know that boy that i like? he never ceases to amaze me. took me out for yummy vegan dinner & (un-vegan) ice cream the night before my b-day, surprise bought me this print that i love so much, cooked me homemade mac & cheese as well as some criminally delicious lemon bars, and did it all with a smile on his face. and in less than a month, he's stuck with me for good. i win.

i found myself in one of my favorite shops in philly, art in the age, the other day, after i saw the violet bag in the window. i had to have it. i was already justifying it as a birthday present for myself when i saw the price tag... let's just say that changed things a tad. but i may just have to start pinching some serious pennies anyway, because i am fairly certain it is destiny for me & one of those bags to be inseparable.

a bit of philly: italian market festival

i arrived home from ohio just in the nick of time to take in the super delicious italian market festival. and believe me, this was no coincidence. pasta, cheese, cannolis, me. we had a date.

the boy & i passed these lovely rose bushes on our walk to the festival. south philly may not have a lot of green, but when it does, it makes my heart sing. pretty pretty.

this may not look like much, but it was goooood. penne with vodka sauce & cheese ravioli from talluto's. being vegetarian at the italian market festival can present a bit of a challenge (think pepperoni on sticks & just about every cured meat under the sun), so hip hip hooray for pasta!

can you see those cannolis piled high in the corner there? from the moment i met it, the ricotta chocolate chip from termini brothers is something i just don't know how to live without.

okay, let's talk about this guy: his name is johnny d (see amazing hand-drawn cardboard sign above). he had his own little booth at the festival & was drawing people (they're not pictured, but he was drawing a young couple as i took this photo). at first glance, i thought that he was doing amusement park style caricatures, and honestly, i was impressed. because he looks to be about 12. but no. no, you guys. it's so much better than that... he was drawing stick figures. with sharpies. this officially made him the coolest 12 year old i had ever met. also, it makes him the best businessman ever. because there was definitely a queue to get a johnny d original. wow.

after taking in a few moments of the sleepwells, a stroll into the vintage shoe shop, and a slice of pizza (oops!) from j & j, we headed home, stuffed & happy. a perfect day with my favorite boy.

look at miss ohio

a week at home in ohio and boy, was it just what i needed. six days filled to the brim with thrifting & soul-searching (odd combo, it's true), spent with my endlessly amazing family & friends.

here are some highlights from the trip:

this is ripley, my parents newly adopted 18-ish year old terrier mix pooch. she's pretty blind, pretty deaf, has three teeth (yep, three), and is terribly adorable. the little old lady had us all fooled by her slow-as-molasses trot until she booked it into the woods behind the house in the blink of an eye. one breathless, dress-clad chase & a single (gentle) tackle later, and we were all the wiser to just how much spunk little ripley still has. what a rascal.

and this is the kind-hearted soul who took that little rascal in... my mom. being the good sport/ goofball that she is, she's modeling my freshly thrifted oh-my-goodness-they're-somehow-kinda-in-my-prescription sunglasses from that day's hunt.

loads of buttons at one of my favorite antique malls in cinci. i don't know who owns this booth, but i wish i did. piles of forgotten, mostly worthless ephemera, mounded into lots of little boxes that are stacked one on top of another. ceramic trinkets, old bits of tattered ribbon, discarded bottle openers, handmade doll clothes, beat-up old comics, and none of it organized in any discernible way. it feels a little bit like stumbling into someone's untouched attic every time i visit. and i leave with a handful of old lace bits each time, all hand-priced at 25 or 50 cents. it's just a little slice of heaven. nbd.

another box of lace to which i found myself magnetically attracted. this one yielded one particularly pretty piece that i think i just might fashion into a one of a kind something for the shop. i'll keep you posted on that...

a good time at charming lavomatic with my best pals from high school. if you go, get the beer cheese pretzel bowl. you won't regret it.

kat, pleased as punch with her haul, awaits our super delicious lunch at a full plate, post-treasure hunting.

my haul... and this isn't even all of it! even more lovely lace, two dresses, four bags, a wallet, and some little bits & baubs -- all coming to the shop soon. and it was a great afternoon with an even better gal. yesss.

what i thought would never happen has indeed happened: i have a blog.

since you just never know what life will hand you, i'm going to let this blog take shape as it may. a few things that i am certain it will include are as follows: things that make me smile, people that i love, bits that inspire me, and let's be honest, photos of my pup (because he's all three of those things).
